1. Carbohydrates provide our muscles and organs with quick, easy energy.
This is awesome for fueling our workouts and managing day to day tasks. Without it, our body has to work harder to extract energy from protein and fat stored in our body - which is more difficult to do - resulting in low blood sugar levels which can make us feel fatigued and light headed.
2. Protect the Protein!
What I mean by this is protein has a much more important role to play, such as fueling and nourishing our muscles with Amino Acids, so they repair and grow. When we go on low-carb diets, we are essentially forcing our bodies to use the energy stored in protein and fats, therefore, we are stopping it from doing what it's meant to be doing! This results in muscle loss, fatigue and soreness, as we aren't repairing our muscles from workouts effectively.
3. Fibre, Fibre... Gimme More Fibre.
Fibre helps to keep us full and is also indigestible, which means it is fantastic at helping the body get rid of toxins - grabbing them all on the way through to the exit.. too much info...sorry...But it's true.
Don't eat carbs and you are missing out on this important benefit! Fibre is found in foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables & nuts.
4. They help produce Melatonin, which helps us get to sleep.
I am going out on a limb here and going against many peoples views on the 'timing' of eating carbs.
However, science shows us that carbohydrates are excellent at producing our much needed Melatonin, which gives our body that "ok, I'm ready for sleep" signal.
What that means is you should be aiming to eat some carbs at night to help with our production of Melatonin...no, I'm not talking about that bowl of sugary lollies you had your eye on though.
Instead, I suggest a small bowl of fruit after dinner, or perhaps replace your rice with savory style oats to go with your dinner. The options are endless and there are healthy ways of including this in your diet, and ensuring you stay within your carbohydrate requirements for the day. (see the recipe for savory oats at the end of this post - or click this link to take you straight there)
5. Um, they taste good? Duh!
Need I say more? So much good has come from loving carbs.
Carbohydrates do not need to be feared. They provide endless health benefits and exist in foods as simple as vegetables and fruit. You aren't going to stop eating those are you? Because they are bursting with vitamins and minerals that help to combat a myriad of diseases and illnesses.
Carbs keep us healthy. Carbs keep us happy. Carbs help us function and operate through day to day activities. And finally, carbs provide fuel for our sweat busting workouts. So what's not to love?
